What?

show.Rooms is an interdisciplinary performance format that participatively implements marginalized social issues in vacant commercial premises and public spaces.

show.Rooms uses participatory practices to give space to alternative forms of narration and expression and thus creates impulses for cultural diversity and change.

Diversity in art and culture is a question of representation and opportunities for participation. In each realization, show.Rooms pursues an interventionist and participatory approach: the themes are (re)presented temporarily through performances in vacant spaces and in public spaces. Artists, scientists, but also NGOs and private individuals are involved in each intervention - they are all currently working on the chosen topic or have a personal connection to it. The aim of the performances is to generate heterotopias and, in Foucault's sense, to provide marginalized issues with temporary presence by filling vacant spaces and making way for the absence of content.

With over 30 own productions on 3 continents, in 11 countries and more than 20 cities, as well as publications and conference participation, the work of show.Rooms has been sustainably visible locally, regionally, globally and virtually.

In 2012 it was awarded the "outstanding award” for interculturality by the Austrian Ministry for Education, Art and Culture. In 2016, it was nominated for “place of respect”. In 2022 a comprehensive publication about show.Rooms was released.

Since 2023, schau.Räume has a fixed location that is used as an office, labs and SAFE SPACE.

The focus on participatory art in a professional environment and artistic research is unique in Carinthia and aims to enable regional and international realizations.

show.Rooms is funded by: BMKÖS - Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport of the Republic of Austria; Province of Carinthia - Department of Art and Culture; City of Villach - Department of Culture and Diversity.
